Christmas Traditions in Ukraine

There are several traditions in Ukraine around Christmas such as:

Didukh: a sheaf that represents the spirits of relatives who have passed

Sviata Vecheria: Usually begins on Christmas Eve (December 24) and is comprised of 12 meatless dishes (one dish for each of the 12 apostles)

Ukraine also has its own unique Christmas traditions, such as Koliady (traditional christmas carols) and festive gatherings with friends and family. Many communities host street festivities and other public celebrations, and attending church is an important part of the holiday for many Ukrainians. Around this time, you can also see Vertep, a traditional nativity-style performance often put on by children. Christmas is celebrated on December 25, as with many other western countries, and is a time of warmth and joy to be surrounded by loved ones.

Merry Christmas!
